Prosperity of Togetherness

(a for-profit social enterprise)

(formerly named Amal)

Vision

To establish farmers’ owned and managed fully integrated dairy value chains in Pakistan, providing high quality value added dairy products to consumers in domestic and foreign markets

Mission

Action Plan

The Problem(s)

Pakistan dairy supply chain has huge but unrealized potential. The country is the 4th largest milk producer in world (34 Billion liters/annum), has a huge production base of 8 million households raising 50 million animals, and a domestic market of 170 million people. Unfortunately, the dairy sector is fraught with problems at every step of its supply chain.

Production

  • Low productivity per animal (1/5th of that in US/Australia)
  • Poor farm management (cleanliness, ventilation, water supply etc)
  • Low producing breeds
  • Small herd sizes (>70% households have only 2-5 animals)
  • Lack of veterinary services

Logistics (Collection and Transportation)

  • No refrigeration equipment and/or reliable electric power at farms to store production in hot climate
  • No refrigerated trucks to transport milk from farm to market
  • Limited presence of formal sector who invest in cold supply chains
  • Higher cost of collection because of low volumes at each farm
  • 15-20% volume spoils

Processing and Value-Addition

  • Limited capacity of processing plants
  • Only 4% of milk is processed
  • Formal sector reluctant to invest due to logistics limit supply of quality milk

Marketing, Distribution to Consumers

  • Milkmen deliver at door step in aluminum/brass containers that are unhygienic and don’t protect against dust, germs and heat
  • 96% milk is consumed in raw, unprocessed form
  • Consumers risk their health by consuming the milk that is adulterated with water, antibiotics and other chemicals

What problems Milk’Op is trying to solve?

All of them, one by one. Starting with linking farmers to market through a cold supply chain. This would ensure delivery of quality milk to consumers, and better returns for small dairy farmers.
